Plantings progress!

Howdy All,

Quick update on our seedlings!

Lots and lots of sunflowers coming in! The seeds we harvested last year were all infertile, so I had to buy some new seeds from home depot

Here you can see a tray of our seedlings. The 2 six packs on the left are Lupin. The 8 pack in the bottom right corner is marigold (great at keeping the slugs away!). The 3 brown retangles are some of our tomato plants that have decided to grow.

The 8 pack on the right (with no plants in it) is milk weed. They aren't growing because milk weed is fucking impossible!!! (any advice, please leave them in the comments!)

More soon!

Concrete retaining wall on the expanded veggie slope

Howdy all,

These are photos from a project that we did a while ago last season

We live on a hill, with the bottom of our yard in a bit of a gully. We decided last year to expand our garden and have added a recycled concrete wall to terrace the surface a bit and make plantings easier.

Here you can see what the hill looks like before we did a thing. The small wall you see is the boundary to our current veggie garden, which is also fenced in with chicken wire and bird neting.

Nicky and I dug down into the hill to make a foundation of ~1" of sand

For the foundation, I like to use the largest blocks I can find. They are heavy, and if you lock them into place with sediment, they don't shift around much just because of their mass. Also, if you put a heavy stone ontop of the wall, you have to worry about it falling off and smashing little toes.

Flint is a very good supervisor. This photo was later in the season

Another picture of nicky planting some needs  below the wall. I don't know what she planted, because none of them actually came up! (It was a bad drought year).

We'll update a photo of today's set up once we finish our weeding! Enjoy!

Spring plantings!

Our plantings for this springs garden! The small plant that you see is a banana plant that Gail graciously gave us. I'll probably move it to a larger container soon, but its too cold for it to be outside

It begins !!!!

Tomorrow is a big rain storm here, so I plan on spending the day getting our seeds in their pots. You can see here the first round, Garlic in the small pots and ginger in the larger ones.
